Carmen Amato is the author of over a dozen mystery and thriller novels, and is best known for the Detective Emilia Cruz police series set in Acapulco. The writer, based in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, is a retired CIA intelligence officer and draws on her experience from 30 years in the Agency, in particular from her knowledge of the war on drugs.

Carmen’s career in counterdrug and espionage work has helped to shape the plots of her crime thrillers, most notably her award-winning series about the Mexican-based detective.

The character Cruz is the first female police detective in Acapulco and Carmen’s gripping novels chart her adventures as she confronts Mexico’s cartels, corruption and social inequalities. The series won the Poison Cup award for Outstanding Series from CrimeMasters of America in both 2019 and 2020 and has also been optioned for television.
